| Wapogasset fished extremely tough this past weekend. 14" fish proved very hard to find. Only the team of Ryan Dickey and Nick Wilson were able to scratch out a limit for the day. With that catch and Tom Harkman only managing 2.98 lbs, Nick lifts himself back into third place overall, 3.4 lbs behind overall, and 0.2 lbs behind Jeff Wilson. The season will finish up, and the AOY race determined at Bone Lake on September 18th. |
The club visited Grand Rapids to fish Pokegama over the weekend. Saturday was cold, overcast, and windy, but the fishing was very good. The weather did a 180 when the skies cleared and warm weather finally moved in on Sunday. The water was very clear and calm Sunday, making it more challenging to locate and catch fish.

Like a bunch of Mailmen, Sunrise Bassmasters fished through rain, snow, sleet, and hail this past Saturday. And despite the challenging weather, alot of fish were caught throughout the day, with five of the seven boats bringing in limits. The ad-hoc team of Tom Harkman, Jeff Wilson and Nick Wilson came out on top with a bag of 5 largemouth going for 14.04 pounds. Predominant patterns were working jigs, worms, and jerkbaits around weedbeds near spawning flats.

Today on Medicine Lake, Russ Cooper and Kevin Nelson slammed a huge limit of bass. Their 5 fish weighed 20.66 pounds, which gives them the 2nd all-time biggest bag in Sunrise history. Perhaps more impressive, is that it is the largest non-paper tournament weight in Sunrise history by almost two pounds.

The club spent the weekend in the Brainerd area, fishing Whitefish on Saturday and Gull on Sunday. The club has experienced more than it's share of wind in the last 2 seasons, and this weekend was no exception. Winds were fierce on both days as a major front moved in, and the bite may have suffered some because of it. But Sunrise is a gritty bunch and persevered; Wayne & Adam and Nick & Ron won the Whitefish and Gull events, respectively. The race for Angler of the Year and the 2009 State Team is heating up. 3.5 lbs is all that separates 7th place from 1st place, and there are some Big Weight lakes coming up. The biggest movers after this weekend are Ryan Dickey moving from 10th to 3rd place, and Joe Anderson moving from 11th to 5th place. The
club visited White Bear Lake this weekend, which despite some dire
practice reports, produced some quality fish. Nick WIlson and JIm
Nordlund flipped their way to 16.44 pounds. Nick notched his 4th win
of the season, and put a stranglehold on the Angler of the Year race.
Gregg and Roger also flipped up their 14.22lb bag, on docks and
milfoil. Tom Stanton and Jeff had a different idea, and weighed
13.36lbs, all deep on drop shot rigs.

While the early morning bite was tough, as a whole, Island provided some outstanding fishing later in the day. The team that cashed in on this mid-day bite the best was Steve Perrault and Jeff WIlson. Several of their largest fish were reported to come from the numerous overhagning willow trees and were caught on black/blue jigs. A key was to make many casts to one single key area. Their largest bass was caught after making as many as a dozen casts to the same exact area under a willow tree. Second place went to Lindblom and Pearson. Docks, timber, and reeds fished with black/blue jigs and worms provided the majority of thier bag.

Sand Lake is known as a quality bass fishery with both numbers and size. Most memvbers who had traveled north to practice hinted of great catches and expectations were quite high. However, once again come tournament day, the bass decided to not cooperate as well as expected. Karlsson and Lindblom started the day fishing crankbaits and worms on the weedlines, but culled several fish from back ends of reedbeds near the end of the day. A highlite for their day was Paul catching 6 bass on 6 casts under one dock with a secret bait Paul has been working this summer. Gregg caught bass #7 under this dock when they passed by a short time later.

Trout Lake produced quite a few nice bags on Sunday. Wayne Farr and Nick Wilson (3rd Win this year!) take top honors with 5 fish for 16.35 lbs. Nick saw his lead cut to 4 lbs on Saturday, only to come out Sunday and extend his lead back to 5.5 lbs. The pressure of leading the AOY race just doesn't seem to phase him!

The rain soaked tournament on Sturgeon Lake is in the books. Russ Cooper was a one man wrecking
crew, winning with just 4 fish, including a 5.22lb Big Bass. The next
three teams were all close, weighing in less than a pound behind.

John Frank and Eric Wilson won the 3rd Annual Tom Pearson Memorial tournament with a limit of fish (and one coughed up mouse) weighing 12.75 pounds. Weights were down somewhat from when Sunrise last visited Red Cedar. Smallmouths again played a factor, with many being weighed for the top 4 teams.

club enjoyed a great day on beautiful Red Cedar Lake. Leading the way
was the Greg Anderson and Nick Wilson with a bag of Smallies weighing
15.25 pounds. Close behind was Adam Wilson and Roger Loman with 14.83
pounds. The Father and Son team of Wayne and Deon Farr took third place
with 13.67 pounds, including Big Bass of the day, a 5.13 lb
Largemouth.

This weekend, Gregg Lindblom once again showed the club why he loves Pokegama. Teaming with Ryan Dickey, they brought in a 18.77lb bag, including a 5.29 lb Smallmouth for Big Bass. Just over 2 lbs behind was the consistent Nick Wilson and Joe Anderson.
